Well, that was the first time that I've ever been caught in a rip...lucky that Mum realized we were in one before it was too late.

Anyway...

I do not think that the change of Faramir's character was acceptable - please note that I respect Nuru's view that it is, I just don't think so myself.

The first objection, is, obviously, that it is different from the book.

The second...Faramir, IMHO, was a strong enough character not to try to change himself in order to please others. But that's just my opinion.

The third: Faramir said 'I would not pick up Isildur's Bane even if it was lying on the side of the road.' He had enough sense not to be tempted by the Ring, unlike his brother, who was not so strong in holding to what he knows is good as he is in physical battle.

I have my suspicions that Peter considered Faramir's character 'too good to be true', as he - IMO - might have thought Gollum's character 'too bad to be true'. So that is my fourth - Peter's arrogance as a director.

I have a couple of other reasons, but I've forgotten them at present. I'll edit this message and put them in if I remember. And if you want me to elaborate, go ahead and ask me.

Lets just put it this way, i was very angry at the film's "version" of Faramir, and had to be very self restrained the first time is saw it. I love him in the book!!

I'm in two minds about it. The first time I saw the movie I was more dissapointed than anything else, cause I'd hoped that none of the characters would be changed so much. It was also outdone by the way Theoden was represented, that really annoyed me. But after watching it again from an outsiders point of view, ie, someone who's not read the books, it was fine. Just added to the struggles Frodo was facing.
But no, I don't think his character should've been changed that much.

All right, here we go.....

I am one of the few that like Faramir, and sometimes it's hard because just about everyone disagrees with me, but since I believe in my opinion I stick to it!

My story has basically put all my thoughts into words... not very well, mind you, but that's only the first draft. It's been mistaken for a story where Faramir tries to change himself, etc. That's not the way it is.

Bekah already knows this, because we've discussed it over email. The last thing my book is is an interpretation of the book Faramir. When I wrote that story, I had to pretend Faramir first came into existence when Peter Jackson decided to make a movie. I couldn't let the book influence my writing at all.

Here's an exert of an email I sent to Bekah:

Let's say that my father and my eldest brother were working on a computer game together (like they currently are) and then he is killed/dies. My second eldest brother I would imagine would instantly offer to take his brother's work for his father. Faramir in my story was not trying to to be Boromir. He could never be Boromir no matter how hard he tried. He was trying to make up for the death of his brother. Then this hobbit comes with this great weapon, the Ring. Faramir, just as he is in the book, is tempted, and as Boyens goes too far he becomes greatly tempted. He makes the excuse that he's bringing the Ring to Gondor because Boromir is dead and that's what Boromir would do.... that that is his, Faramir's, duty to his father. But then he realizes that his duty is not to his father in this case.... his duty is to his home, Middle-Earth, and he can't serve his home unless he disobeys what his father would command.

Faramir isn't trying to change himself to make his father happy: he thinks it is his duty to bring the Ring to his father. And he then realizes that in this situation his duty is not to his father, but to Middle-Earth (I'm basically repeating what I said above, but who cares?).

And that's how my story is, and also how my feelings of Faramir in the movie are. Osgiliath was, in a word, unnecessary, but, whether the rest of you do or not:

I look at Osgiliath as a scene, not part of Faramir. And then Faramir becomes all right, which he otherwise wouldn't have been. If the scene Osgiliath hadn't been in the movie, neither would have been his line "The Ring will go to Gondor." I see Faramir as a victim of Boyens who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and was therefore inserted into the scene. But the Osgiliath scene is not part of Faramir... Faramir is a part of the Osgiliath scene.

I don't like the way Faramir is portrayed in the movies, because I'm a real lover of the books.

In the books Faramir was a loyal son. Yes, he tried to do his duty towards the father but he knew that if Denethor got the Ring, it wouldn't turn out for the good of Gondor. He felt that his duty was first and foremost to his country.


In the movies, he is almost just like Boromir. He tries to take the Ring from Frodo, but not for himself. He probably was trying to make up for Boromir's death to his father. But in the end he realizes that it isn't right.

The real Faramir didn't realize- he already knew.

I saw the title of this thread and my jaw dropped... there's a good smilie of that from TMC... anyhow. I loved Faramir. I hated his representation in TTT, but in the ROTK, I came to respect PJ's judgement of Faramir's character. I guess portraying him as evil was another way to show how even the noblest soul can be overcome by the evil of the One Ring. Frodo, however, while his intentions are good, I agree with his representation. This is offtopic, but he's such a twat!

Yes, now that ROtK is out, I'm not so mad. He rather redeemed himself, and you saw why he did it. I felt much more sorry for him once I saw how Denethor was. Mean ol' crazy man...

Everyone in here has the right idea. Faramir was a great character in the book and it was really unfair to cast him down like PJ did. But it made the film interesting and kept it flowing. I can't be mad a the man who mad such a masterpeice. I love everysingle one of the movies and eventhough they are not like the books I really like them. The movies are really moving just like the books, I always bawl when reading or watching them. So thumbs up PJ!

Dropping in really quick to say 'hello, I do stop by sometimes still,' and also to say:

RotK has in many ways redeemed Faramir, especially the EE. I'll take a slice of humble pie, as it is often put, and say that I've changed my mind about him since I started this thread. Maybe that isn't exactly humbling to say, but I feel humbled. I was such an ardent defender of Faramir's before and now I wish I had been quite so ardent.

Don't misunderstand me... I still think Faramir was all right, especially in RotK. But in TTT... well... I've been re-reading the books and re-watching the movies. While reading the books I realise anew why I've adored Faramir so much since childhood. And while watching the film I realise for the first time that much of his nobility of character is loss.

Perhaps letting him be as the book portrayed him would downplay the power of the Ring, but, faith, I loved him for that nobleness, even in the face of the Ring, and I miss it in him when I see him in the movies.

So, to be short, I'm not longer such a very fervent defender of movieFaramir, but neither am I a crazed hater... I like him overall, and am rather disappointed with him in some aspects.

Well, Faramir is surrounded by problems. In TTT he's very problematic in himself, especially in the EE when he beats up Gollum, I was quite shocked by that (I was even more shocked by Sam's violence but that's a different story). The blame of Gollum turning bad went from Sam to Faramir and that's just not right.

Then in RotK, I hesitate to say he redeemed himself because he didn't do much other than blindly follow orders and be ill (ok, so the EE put that to rights) but my attention was drawn from Faramir to Denethor. Apparently as far as character mangling goes, like father, like son.
