I was wondering what you all think about Jane Austen. I'm reading Emma now, and I frankly, thinks she either meh or "sucks so bad..." I'm still reading Emma, but I'm having a difficult job wading through it...there's so much dialogue (which isn't bad in and of itself), but the dialogue is about...trivial things...like one of those people that just talk about fluff and gossip. I really dislike it for that reason, and it's all about property and not marrying below your station. I mean, if you love the guy just marry him! I know it was a different time back then...but having a whole novel about it...eugh. Of course, I have not finished Emma so by the end of the book I may have to eat my words.
So, what do you all think of her? Please vote and say why you voted and all that...

I'm sorry to say this; but that book is one of the most boring books I've ever read. It doesn't interest me at ll. It's just...not very...It's not a good book a all. Her writing is good, of course, but otherwise, it's not worth reading at all. I regret using precious time on that one... Heh "She sucks so bad". =P

I have to say, I read Emma, Sense and Sensibility and Pride and Predudice, and I have to say, (even though it was years ago now, and granted they may be more interesting if I try them now that I'm older and hopefully wiser,) I did find them quite dull, so 'meh'

Goodness GRACIOUS! I'm guessing most of you (if not all) are girls in your teenage years? If so, I am not surprised you dislike Jane Austen; most teenage girls do, though they didn't used to. I'd imagine you would dislike the Bronte sisters as well. Lots of girls find Lord of the Rings boring as well; I find this equally as shocking.
I voted her as a most excellent female authoress, because frankly she is. This has been agreed on for a long time... I would not say she was bad just because I don't like her style; yet, as it is, I love her style. It's challenging, it's something that most modern people aren't used to (though I grew up on it), and the messages it gave were excellent for my character. I recall reading Sense and Sensibility and learning so much of what was good character and what wasn't. The contrasts between Elinor and Lucy Steeles, between Willoughby and Colonel Brandon... you'd find one that was noble and good while the other wasn't, and one was intelligent and sensible while the other was silly and lacking in intelligence.
Oooh... but... I would not recommend anyone to start on Emma. I personally don't care much for Emma myself. The ordeal of reading Emma can be compared to the ordeal of reading Great Expectations. A very awful ordeal. Start with Pride and Prejudice or Sense and Sensebility, but don't go to Emma until you've read some previous works of Jane Austen. Emma, as a character, is rather... *shudders*
Do I take it, InklingElf, that you're on my side and you like Jane Austen? Or are my fears at last being realized as I slowly discover I am one of the sole survivors of those who appreciate her work? *trails away weeping*

I'm not a teenager, but I didn't vote most excellent either. I did vote in the I reccommend her catagory because she is very good. I read Pride and Prejudice completely when I was in high school. But it did take some perserverence. Once I got to the halfway point, it became a book I couldn't put down. I reccommened to my mom, and she really liked it too.
I tried reading the others, but most have been too distracted because I could never finish them. One day, though, I plan to!
For the auththors of her time she is most definatly one of the best. But compared to some more modern female authors, well lets just say its probably not a fair comparison.

Wren, True, in comparison to authoresses of our time Austen might not be at the very top, but I voted 'Excellent' because I did not want to compare a writer of then with a writer of now. That is to say, during her time she was considered one of the best (and still is by some), and the poll was not taking into account the comparison with modern writers, or I don't believe so. Of course, it is mainly a matter of taste, and I have been reputed for having the oddest taste in all things, from books to clothes. Yet I am encouraged to hear that there is another that didn't find her books entirely boring, even if you don't think of her quite as highly as I do. But, Wren, for reading another of her works, go for Sense and Sensibility. I had such a difficult time putting that book down! Though, er.... Lucy Steeles rather got on my nerves, but she was rather the type of character intended to do just that.

I don't really know what to say... I don't really enjoy old English literature, like Dickens, and the Bronte sisters that much. I prefer less wordy books.

Your quite right, Nurumaiel. It is a matter of taste, and I have always been partial to fantasies like Lord of the Rings, or fairy tales. lol. I still enjoy a good fairy tale. It seemed to me that Pride and Predjudice did have some of those elements of a good fantasy: good vs evil, an adventure or two, (realistically portrayed of course) and romance. But its all of those things put together that made it such a good novel. Trashy romance novels, or dimestory scifi-stories soon get old. Its always basically the same thing. Pride and Predjudice is a true classic that has stood the test of time.
Thank you for tip on Sense and Sensiblity. I will give it a try. I think being out of high school for uh... more than a few years, maybe give me a new perspective on Jane Austen's writing. Another one I had my eye on was Northanger Abby. I've had an interest in that sort of gothic, but I haven't been devleoping it recently.
Speaking of Classic writers. I also enjoyed Jane Eyre.

After wading through the first third or fourth of Pride and Prejudice I have this to say about her:
She has wit. She lacks experience. End of story.
