Advertising cigarettes is already banned in the Uk, but i take it it isn't in the USA and other places. Well, I can still argue this point!
An advertisement only has one pupose: to get people to buy that prouct, or listen to that viewpoint. Averts are designed to make people think exactly what the company wants them to think. In advertising cigarettes, they are trying to get buyers. The company are NOT going to have an advert telling you the dangers of smoking, then try and sell you the product. Because of this, people watching, listening or reading the advert will assume that cigarettes are good and buy them, because they have not been warned of the dangers. If they don't already know that dangers, they are not likely to be told between the time they see the advert and when they buy a packet of cigarettes.
So, it is my belief that by advertising cigarettes we ARE promoting them.
Down with fags!

Correct me if I am wrong, but is not the purpose of advertising: to promote something?
It is my view that advertising or not advertising cigarettes makes no difference. Many of the people who I know that smoke have family and friends that smoke. People rarely go "I think I'll start smoking now." just for the hell of it. They are either pressured into it or are going by example.
I believe that advertising is not the way to go about takling the smoking problem. Education on the adverse effects of smoking should be the way to go as smoking is so ingrained into our society that it makes no difference what brand of cigarette is being plastered all over the place.
Don't get me wrong, I still think smoking sucks.
