-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ani Dao crouched low in the underbrush of the forest. Lakr Bo was not far in front of her signaling to her that the coast was clear. She crept forward, a silent ghost, hidden by night’s shadows. The two warriors were side by side between a pair of rocks. “There were four just now, and seven more at the nest,” whispered Lakr Bo to his friend. He was referring to the spiders that had been spotted near the palace. A rustling sound over their heads caused them to freeze in terror. Suddenly a spider lowered itself down in front of them, meaning to crawl their way, yet did not know of their presence. In a blur of movement, Lakr Bo and Ani leapt from their concealment and to each side of the spider. Lakr Bo loosed an arrow that struck the spider in its side, causing him to lurch towards the male elf in fury. But Ani was quicker and caught it with her first throwing knife. It slung across the monster’s eyes, blinding all of them, then stopping in a tree behind it. Writhing with pain, Lakr unsheathed his elven sword and sliced the creature strait through. At once the spider ceased movement, and sagged to the ground.
The other spiders had heard the fight and were bounding their way to the scene. Ani Dao and Lakr Bo sprinted back towards the clearing not far from where the nest was so as to have a better chance for a fight. As they ran, Lakr Bo uncoiled a rope and tied knots in certain places, making a sturdy trap. He halted for a second to fit the two ends over knots on parallel trees. The spiders were approaching them from both sides now. Ani Dao had disappeared into the trees and Lakr Bo was waiting to trip his snare. The first three spiders crossed the line and he pulled it taught. The ground beneath the three monsters fell away, sending them falling into the pit. The spider after them was running too quickly and slipped into the hole as well.
Lakr then turned to face the creatures at the nest. But as he did so, a great furry leg hit him and knocked him to the ground and he struck his head against a rock.
Ani Dao sprang from her hiding place and came at the spiders with the fury of the sea. Unsheathing her knives all at once she whipped them around her head, burrowing themselves deep into the spider’s bodies.
One by one the spiders disappeared and Ani Dao crawled over to where Lakr Bo had landed after the last spider kicked him. A gash had formed on his side and blood had begun soaking the forest floor. The she-elf knelt down beside him quickly, her blonde hair falling around his face. She pressed her two fingers to the side of his neck, checking for a pulse. Getting a steady beat she gently checked his body for broken bones. Finding none, Ani Dao tore her cape and wrapped the rag around his mid-section. She then opened her canteen and bathed his face with water, and got some down his throat. Lakr Bo’s eyelids fluttered and opened. He took in a very hazy but beautiful Ani Dao.
“Are they gone?” asked a dizzy elf as he took in his surroundings.
“Ay.” Ani Dao sat back on her heels, resting her elbows on her knees in relief. She brushed the hair off his wet face.
“Judging by the bruise on my head, I’m guessing that last spider threw me up against a tree was it?” He grimaced and Ani Dao laughed softly,
“A rock.”
“Of course.” He didn’t attempt to sit up knowing better than to do so. “Run back to the realm … Get a healer … Quick …” His eyelids fluttered and he drifted back into unconsciousness. Ani Dao forced back a small tremor of fear and raced through the forest like the wind through a new bloomed meadow ripping the petals off spring’s treasures. Tears threatened to break her courage as she tore through the opening of the forest to the palace gate. She didn’t slow as she approached and entered, sweeping the two guards almost off balance. She ran strait to Rihd Hal’s chamber and banged on the door. A young elf emerged in a flurry of purple robes.
“Quick Rihd! Lakr needs help!” Equipped with stones and herbs, the healer ran after her as she made back towards the clearing where she had left him. Five guards followed them as well as Ani Dao beckoned to them in her mad dash back to the fallen elf.
When they arrived, Lakr Bo was still unconscious but the spiders had not returned. Rihd Hal immediately began to tend to his patient as the guards made a protective circle about them, bows drawn. Ani Dao stood too, looking into the surrounding forest.
“The spiders are not here. Not even close …” the guard called Tryfin pointed out.
“Why haven’t they returned—” As soon as Gyld spoke the words, an orcish arrow sped out of the trees at Gyld just as Tryfin’s own arrow intercepted it. A dozen orcs jumped out of the forest. The elves immediately overtook them in a barrage of arrows. Another onslaught of orcs came promptly and were again overtaken. The routine continued.
“Rihd! Hurry! We can not hold them forever, we shall run out of arrows!!” Another guard called Frighn backed up to stand over the unconscious Lakr Bo and the healer. Ani Dao dove behind Frighn to speak with the healer.
“We must run for it! We shan't hold them long enough!” The young healer nodded and together they carefully grasped the helpless elf between them. Flanked on both sides by the guard, they sped back through the forest. When they arrived at the gate, more elves were awaiting them and they were quickly enclosed behind the magic gates of the Mirkwood palace.

Elentari wandered through Mirkwood. She wondered how Lorin and Min were doing. Lorin seemed to have coped well with only one hand, and now, six years on, it was as if Elentari's friend had never lost her hand. The elf-witch now stayed both in the city and in the forest, being both wanderer and settler. Spiders had started to come back to Mirkwood now that Arawil was not there to slay them, so Elentari killed any foul beast that crossed her path.
Almost as if it could read her mind, a great spider scuttled away from where Elentari stood. She was on it in a second and pierced its rancid flesh with her sword Star. The spider cried in pain as the Elvish inscription burnt its flesh. As it fell, Elentari pulled Star out of its back and cleaned her sword on a cloth. This was the second spider that day, and it was not even noon yet. Evil had been growing once more in Mirkwood, and Elentari did not like it.
Voices floated on the breeze across to where Elentari stood. They were running quickly back towards the palace. Elentari got in view just in time to see a Spider crash against the newly closed gates. Spiders, many spiders. There were nearly ten spiders trying to get inside the palace. Elentari leapt out of the tree she had sat in and attacked the spiders. Ten was not too many. She may get injured, but when you have faced the spawn of Ungoliant you do not fear such small spiders. Not unless they were being helped by some greater magic.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ani Dao paced outside Rihd Hal’s room, as she had been for the past four hours. She had been bid stay outside until the healer’s work was done. So the warrior had remained put until further notice. When Gyld came upon her, she was sitting against the wall beside the door, have exhausted herself with worrying and sleeping lightly. He smiled and knelt down in front of her placing his hand on her knee. She started and smiled a she saw who it was. “Any news? I dozed—” She began to stand when Gyld shook his head.
“No, you’d be the first informed and by Rihd, not men. Are you hungry?” Of course she wasn’t, elves didn’t get hungry quickly but it was thoughtful of her brother to ask. She shook her head and glanced behind him towards the courtyard fountain.
“No thank you. But wine wouldn’t do me any harm.” Gyld laughed.
“No, I’d guess not.” He helped his little sister up and they made their way to the feasting hall.
Like usual, elves crowded the table, absorbed in talk and laughter. Ani Dao snatched a loaf of bread, and filled herself a goblet of rich red wine. Taking the food out to the fountain, she sat as Gyld talked.
“Evil is alive again in the forest, the guard has been having trouble with these spiders. There are far too many since—”
“I know, since Arawil left us,” interrupted the elf, “don’t spend your time informing me of things I already am well aware of.” Motioning for Gyld to continue with his story, she took another bite of her bread.
“Ani Dao, we can not hold these spiders back. You felt their fury on the palace door. It seems to be led by some greater evil.” Gyld tried to get his sister to see their position.
“There is no greater evil. It’s the same as its always been, just more of them. They aren’t a real threat to us. They cannot enter the palace, and we have the strength enough to defeat them—”
“One at a time, and that’s too slow,” interrupted her brother. “It’s coming from Dol Guldur, Ani. We must stop it!”
“You aren’t sure, Gyld. It would not be wise to endanger our people on some whim!” She stood up getting angry.
“Whim? Ani, it’s no question Sauron’s forces are still there and bloodthirsty!” The argument was getting worse as it did every time. The she-elf looked at her brother, blind to his reasoning.
“You have taken this up with the king. I know. And you have been granted permission to a band of elves to explore it. I know that too. And there is something else I know. You will all die in vain. But not until you waste your time entering the fortress, for no evil has left, it still dwells there, trapped within the labyrinth of that keep!” She knelt down before her brother. “Drop this folly, for that is what it is! You will only cause us more grief.” Gyld did not look into his sister’s eyes. She had been spying much, and knew everything. He was still convinced to go through with his plan, whether she came or not.
“I am sorry sister, but I must go. Whether you come or not is your decision to make.” With that he stood and left the courtyard, a heartbroken elf watching him go.
That night, along with a dozen of the guard, Gyld left Mirkwood in exploration of Dol Guldur. He was gone for three months before the foul creature brought back the heads of the missing elves and left them to rot in front of the palace gates. Ani Dao had been right, as well as Gyld. Evil was alive, and it had ventured beyond the Dol Guldur fortress. Trying to find out if that was so, a dozen elves had been imprisoned, tortured, and then executed. Determined for revenge on their lost kinsman, war had been declared on the evil city, though it had not been announced. Allies, such as wizards and other friends, were on their way to Mirkwood to defeat by stealth and magic, one of the last remaining enemies of Middle Earth.

Idhren hit the spider, hard, and it fell heavily onto its back, just as it was blasted apart by a bolt of lightning from her staff. Looking around, she surveyed the area for more spiders. Nothing. But even one was an oddity. They usually were not so bold as to attack people by themselves with the cover of dark. She shrugged to herself, and continued towards the doors of the King's palace.
As she walked, she looked at the forest around her. Mirkwood. The dark trees hung over the faint path, and a faint feeling of evil lurked in the very air. Once it had been called Greenwood, the greatest forest in region. But as the years went by, it had fallen into shadow, and an evil had taken up residence there. They had suspected a Nazgûl, but it had been far worse. The Dark Lord had taken up residence in the forest. After a great struggle, they had driven him out. Now, he had finally been destroyed. But Dol Guldur still remained, poisoning the forest with its evil. It was on that matter that she had journeyed to Mirkwood to speak with King Thrainduil.
* * * * *
Standing tall before her, the gates of the palace bore marks of fighting. Blood of spiders and marks of fighting. The evil was growing daily. Soon Mirkwood would be dead, and then the darkness would spread, killing all like a cancer. Idhren turned her attention back to the doors. Placing her staff's tip on the center, she uttered a word. "Panta." (Open!) Grudgingly, the huge stone doors creaked open. Idhren smiled her herself, and stepped inside, the doors swinging shut with a bang behind her. Almost instantly, two elves emerged from the shadows in the hall, and barred her way, swords naked in their hands.
The first addressed her. "Daro." (Halt.) He then turned to his companion, and said to him, "Hon avo dhago." (Do not kill her.) The other lowered his sword. He turned back to Idhren, and asked her, " Man agorech, ias bedich? Man eneth lín?" (Who are you, where are you going? What is your name?)
Idhren lowered her staff, and opened her hands, to show that she was unarmed. "Idhren. Aníron peded Thrainduil." (Idhren. I wish to speak to Thrainduil.) His expression changed from suspision to recognition.
"Ai! Suilad! Aphado nin." (Ah! Greetings! Follow me.)
She nodded and followed him down the stony hall.
* * * * *
In the great hall of the palace, she was received by the King. (OOC: Okay, I'm going to talk in English now. Just makes it easier. ) "Greetings King. I have come on a mission. Long ago, the Dark Lord came and settled in the place you call Dol Guldur. As you know, he has been vanquished. But, his fortress remains. Its evil is spreading like a cancer, covering the forest in darkness. The evil has already begun to spread, as you may have noticed. It must be destroyed."
The king nodded slowly. "I understand that Dol Guldur must be destroyed, but it is a risky thing."
He continued. "My people have been sent out on patrol, and only their heads have been returned. Rumors of things not seen for many thousands of years have been reported to me. I will not risk my people's lives needlessly." Finished, he sat back in his throne.
But Idhren was not finished. "Lord, I know that it will be hard, dangerous, and some will undoubtedly never return from this venture. But if we destroy this last place of evil, the world will be free at last from the evil of Sauron. Please grant me at least an council with you and your advisors to hear my plan. Then you willl decide if this venture will be taken."
The King closed his eyes, deep in thought. At last, he spoke. "I will grant you this. But let not your hopes rise, for this is a great thing that you ask of us. But know rest for a while. Undoubtedly your journey has been long and tiring. Quarters have been prepared for you." He fell silent, his eyes closed, and his brows furrowed.
Idhren bowed, and was led out of the hall by a guard, and down the stony depths of the great palace to the lodging prepared for her. But in her heart, she knew that Dol Guldur must be destroyed, with or without the support of the King.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ravenne sat in meditation, searching for that day's purpose, looking through the mists, suddenly visions flashed before her eyes. Mirkwood. A darkness, a shadow. A palace. She knew what she had to do. Now which way?
She got up and drew an intricate heart in the dirt on the floor, then she carefully held her staff upright in the center of it. Murmuring, "Heart lead me where you will," she let go, and the stick fell straight with a dead thud on the floor. Ravenne stared in the direction it pointed for a few moments, then gathered up her belongings in her dragonhide bag, and set off.
* * * She found herself looking up at the palace gates. "I am Ravenne, healer and wise woman!" she shouted up at the guard, "come to join the quest and help destroy the shadow in Mirkwood."
"You must have great power," said one of the guards, "to know what is secret and kept only to the peoples of this place, but whether this power is for good or evil, we are yet to know".
In that instant Ravenne heard a hissing coming from behind her. She whirled around and found herself surrounded by spiders. Thinking fast she pulled out a bag of white powder, a quick working poison, that penetrates the spiders skin and kills them almost instantly. She threw the poison in a thick cloud over them and they slowed down as it affected their nervous systems, paralyzing from the legs upwards. Soon they were all dead.
Then a voice from above called, "You have destroyed the messengers of the shadow; we will escort you to Thranduil."
"Many thanks," Ravenne murmured as she was ushered through the high palace gates to Thranduil.
Occ: that ok?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ani Dao walked solemnly down the hallways of the palace in a black dress, her face covered by a sheer shadow veil like it had been for the past month since her brother's head had been returned. Eating only in the mornings, she never slept. The elf assassin didn't speak either. The other Mirkwoodians had left her alone and she was allowed to go about her business undisturbed. Mourning through the day, she slowly began to dwindle her life away. Tears often fell from her once strong and brave eyes, and her calloused hands grew soft from running her hands along the drapes in her room. Then the wizards began to arrive requesting audiences with the king. Her mind reopened to the living world around her and she often sat by her father in the throne room listening to the people’s requests. Appalled at one suggestion of sending another party out, she asked for a private discussion with the king.
“My lord! Two-dozen brave strong elves were tortured and murdered, their heads delivered to your door! And now you are consenting to allow strangers to ask you for more parties?” Frustration built up inside her stomach, knotting it uncomfortably. Thranduil said nothing to her and gazed solemnly out the window. “My lord—?”
“Ani Dao? How old are you?” The elf was taken aback by the question. She had braced herself for a rebuttal of intelligence and rational reasoning that was expected from a king. How old are you? Age was not important to elves, they do not keep track even for the most part. How old are you?
“I know not my lord. Two and a half thousand?” The old king nodded.
“You have lived long then and you have seen little.” Ani Dao gave him a perplexed look. “Naught have you traveled beyond our borders. Dol Guldor is evil and is spreading towards our forest. You have heard the story of Frodo Nine-fingers?” The she-elf had the gist of the story, but never listened to it completely. Mirkwood had been no part of that war.
“We have no obligation to Middle Earth. We can simply continue to protect our kingdom, and spare the lives of our children.” said Ani Dao, stepping forward. He turned on her and said,
“I have given one permission to discuss this with the council. I am part of the council am I not?”
“You are the head of it my lord.”
“I would that a party is not dispatched. The entire guard stands behind me. Who will the council majority believe?” Ani Dao smiled. Bowing her head slightly, she turned to leave.
“You will of course attend the proposal given by Idhren?” Ani Dao froze. The elf witch? Facing back towards the king she whispered,
“I would be honored.” With that, she left the chamber.

Ooc: This is my first go, so be gentle...actually...criticise! Its the only way I'll learn!
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Laiqawen held the small dagger a few inches away from her face, positioned directly between her eyes. She focused on lining the small point on the hilt up with the block of wood she had set up a meter or so away. Concentrating intensely, she stood for a few moments stone still. Suddenly, with a flick of her wrist, she sent the dagger rushing through the air before it hit the center of the block with deadly accuracy. Smiling, she retrieved her daggers and slipped them into their individual sheathes in her belt. She made her way out of the courtyard into the main hall, it was almost mid-day and the King had requested to see her.
Laiqawen strode down the halls swiftly. She was not entirely sure why the King had asked to see her; she hoped she wasn't getting in trouble for anything...but she couldn't recall having done anything wrong. As she neared the chamber she saw a figure exit it. As the elf drew closer she realized it was Ani Dao. She was looking sad as was usual for her lately. 'Good morning, Ani Dao!' she said. Ani Dao continued to walk and barely acknowledged the young Elven-maid. Laiqawen shook her head sadly. Since the death of her brother, Ani Dao had not been the same fiery spirit she once was.
Laiqawen knocked gently on the door of the King's chamber. He looked up, stirred out of thought by the sound. 'Ah, Laiqawen, come in.'
She hesitated for a moment then entered, bowing before seating herself opposite the great Elf. 'My Lord,' she began, 'May I ask why you wished to see me? I am not in trouble, am I?'
He smiled. 'No, you are not in trouble.' Laiqawen sighed with relief. 'You would know, I suppose, of the increase of spider attacks in our land?' Laiqawen's face darkened.
'Yes, my Lord,' she replied.
'Well, we are trying to stop them.'
Laiqawen studied the Kings face with confusion. She knew the King was trying to stop the attacks, everyone did. She saw in his face that he was restraining from saying too much, and she wondered why. 'Yes, my Lord,' she said again. 'But what does this have to do with me?'
He frowned. 'I am not at liberty to say all that I wish to, but there is a council coming together to discuss possible action, held by Idhren: you know who she is, do you not?'
Laiqawen's eyes widened. 'I have heard of her, Lord, but I thought she was but a myth...'
The King smiled once more. 'Many young elves think the same way, some who are older and wiser know better. She is an Istari.'
Laiqawen gasped. An Istari? she thought. An elf witch? Such a great power among us!
'Laiqawen, I wish for you to attend this council.'
Laiqawen was taked aback. 'Why my Lord? I am but eight hundred in my years, and as you say there are many older and wiser elves at your disposal, what do you ask of me?'
'Your skill with daggers is unmatched, Laiqawen.'
The young elf read the King's eyes. She knew that this was not why he wanted her to attend, there were many others more skilled with deadlier weapons, but who was she to question the mind of the King? 'If it is what you wish, My Lord, I will come.'
The King nodded. 'Thank you Laiqawen. I will send someone for you when you are needed.'
She arose, bowed and left the chamber, feeling thoroughly confused.

Ooc: What'd ya think? Is Idhren an Istari? I hope so! And Maikafanawen, I hope you dont mind me putting in that little bit about Ani Dao...if theres anything you guys dont like let me know and I'll edit it, okies? Bye!

Elentari was walking down a corridor. A messenger had told her the King wished to speak with her. As she entered the throne room, she bowed low. "My Lord, you have not asked to speak with me for a long while. Something must have happened."
"Elentari, I am glad you are here," said King Thranduil. "As you may have heard, Idhren, an Istari like yourself, is holding a meeting. I would like you to attend this meeting, for I fear we will need your protection once more."
"My Lord, you know I would do as you ask. But what is it I must defend against?"
"Evil is gathering in Dol Guldor once more. You must have noticed the increase in spiders, as you are the Spider Slayer."
"Aye, my Lord, I have. I have killed more than ten already today, and it is only just gone noon. Normally I only that many in a month"
"Then you will attend the meeting?"
"Aye, I will." Elentari stood, and bowed. She walked out of the room hoping that this evil was not as strong as Shelob. It had taken most of the last six years for her power to become what it once was. Elentari decided to go and see an old friend.
~~~~~~~~
"Hreeza, are you there?" shouted the elf-witch. Silvery laughter floated from the ground below her.
"You know a spend most of my time on the ground now. It is no good looking for me in that tree." Hreeza, a wind Sprite with coporeal form, floated up to meet Elentari. "It has been a long time."
Elentari looked at Hreeza's liquid gold eyes. "Hreeza, you must know of the evil gathering in Dol Guldor. King Thranduil has asked me to help Idren, the Istari. Is the evil there stronger than at Cirith Ungol?"
"Yes, I am afraid it is. Elentari, you are going to fight this evil?"
"Yes," replied Elentari. She sighed. "I fear it may be my last battle. My power is only now recovered."
"May the elements be with you Elentari." The two friends hugged, then went their separate ways. Elentari went back to the Palace, to prepare for what was coming.
Huntress shivered, but she wasn't cold Huntress wasn't one of those that felt the cold, despite this she still rapped her cloak around her tighter her eyes pierced the gloom and her ears were ready to hear the slightest sound, another shiver hit her and this time she stopped. It was that feeling again she had first felt it on the edges of Mirkwod something growing in the depths of the wood something dark and evil and in a way it was ancient and that made it terrifying and it took alot to scare a Ranger. The feeling passed and she felt the shivers leave her again. Huntress went to move off when something caught the corner of her eye she swung round and easily slipped into fighting stance with her sword drawn ready to face whatever the forest had to throw at her. Tense listening hard she waited holding her breath it was moving to slow for an orc but maybe a spider trying to come through the trees, she had seen an alarming amount of spiders since entering the forest this would be her seventh today. Closer it was closer she drew the sword back and prepared to strike, the sword came down in a flash of silver but stopped suddenly inches away from the head of a fox it took one look at the person standing over it and ran. Huntress could only frown and mutter to herself,
"I need to relax, the sooner I reach that palace the better." she sheathed her sword and picked up her pack where she had dropped it and began to walk again, she had been going for less than a minute when she heard the crashing of swords and shouting, a savage smile played on her lips and she set forward blending into the shadows going towards the sound of battle, gently she losend her sword in its sheath todays weopen of choice.
The fighting was in the clearing just ahead she could already smell the blood, still staying hidden she stepped into the clearing. Bodies were strewn on the ground she looked at them momenterily they appeard to be elves there was a couple of spiders and orcs quiet a few orcs, movement made her look up, there was still some fighting a couple of elves were trying to fend off two large spiders one of the elves appeared injured and fading fast as the blood poared from a gash down his side the other seemed in fairly good shape but was struggling to fend off the two beasts as his friend faded. Without thinking Huntress drew her legs under her and readied her sword and then lept through the air to luckily land on the back of one of the creatures before it could throw her off she drove her sword down into its head an ear piercing scream ripped through the air and the spider shook and shudderd throwing Huntress from its back. She flew through the air and landed with a thud on the floor with her right arm under her bodie it went very numb with no time to retrive her sword she quickly drew one of her long daggers, the first elf fell to the floor but Huntress could spare no time for him the light of battle in her eyes she ran forward to help the second elf who had just recived a heavy blow about his legs with an artistic flick of her wrist she threw the dagger so it hit the spider in one of its eyes causing it to turn away from the second elf and towards her she stepped back and strung her bow with a well practiced hand, the arrows were ready to go in aimed at its head. The elf was on his feet again limping but still coming towards the spider with a broken sword as he hacked into the spider Huntress loosed her arrows the combined attack was all the spider could take another showring of arrows and the spider fell to the floor twitching slightly but dead.
Huntress turned away from it and retreaved her sword from the head of the first spider wipeing it clean on the grass before she turned back to the elf he had rushed over to other injured elf that had collapsed,
"Hey you alright...." the elf appeared to be leaning over the first elf shaking him and jibbering in elvish to quickly for Huntress to make out she stepped towards him but the feeling came back into her right arm pain exploded through it looking down she saw blood begin to trail down her arm she'd obviously cut it when she fell, but she had no time to worry ingnoring the pain she turned back to the other elf, movement caught her eye another spider was emerging from the trees, slowly at first it had been drawn by the fighting it was bigger than the two Huntress had just helped to fight and there was no way she could take it alone it was over a hundred times her size, without much time for for thought she ran over to the healthier of the two elfs and grabbed him.
"Hey...Hey we have to go." the elf appeard not to hear but kept talking madly for a second she looked down at the injured elf on the ground he looked dead,
"Look we have no choice if we don't go we're going to end up dead like the rest of your friends." she shook the other elf gentey as though trying to wake him he did seem to realise she was serious and his eyes cleared he focused on her,
"We can go but we have to take him with us." Huntress couldn't belive her ears,
"Your not serious he's dead already and he'll be the death of us as well."
"He's not dead yet don't worry i'lll carry him I didn't ask for your help Ranger!" Huntress looked about madly another spider was coming from the woods just as big as the first, she didn't want to find out if there were more, the elf was picking up his injured friend but it appeared he wasn't as healthy as she thought the last blow from the spider caused him to limp meaning he couldn't take the full weight of his friend, finally she sighed and moved round the other side of the injured elf together they took the weight, her right arm was throbbing now, she looked at the other elf " We need to get to the palace can you run." The other elf nodded and grimiced as the set off at a fast pace, seconds later Huntress heard things crashing through the woods behind them the spiders were giving chase.
They haddn't been running long when the turrets of the wall came clear the other elf faultered slightly brining all three down to the ground, Huntress could still hear the spiders coming through the trees not far behind them if they were caught now they'd be dead, ignoring her muscles which were screaming for her to stop she heaved herself to her feet and helped the other elf up they once again picked up the second elf one more sprint adn they'd be at the gate with a yell they surged forward barrelling towards the gate crashing into it side on winceing she started yelling trying to attract attention, the spiders crashed out of the trees clicking they turned there attention towards Huntress and the elves, Guards heard the shouting and looked over the wall seeing her with the two elves and spiders andvancing on them they quickly opened the door, Huntress and the other elf rushed through the gate clossing behind them as the spiders crashed into it, Huntress heard battle once more from the battlements but just collapsed onto the ground by the gate her breath coming out in harsh gasps, Healers and guards all rushed over and began tending to the wounds of all three of them, Huntress not keen on attention brushed them off once her arm had been bandaged, the healithier elf turned to her,
"Thank you Ranger, we would have been killed if you had not come along wait a minute your an...but your an elf." Huntress realised her hair was no longer covering her ears and looked at him and shrugged "And I didn't say i wasn't and you don't need to thank me, all i ask is that i am given an audience with the King." At this another elf stepped forward and Huntress got to her feet, "If you follow me i will be happy to take you to King Thranduil." Huntress just nodded and followed the elf towards the palace. Some how she'd made it.
Lorin was out on urgent business, gathering as many elves together as she could. There were spiders near the doors of the city, nearer than they had been in many decades and that was never a good sign. The king had called up a meeting, he was looking for advice. He had accepted that something must be done about Dol Guldur but he was not sure as to what exactly, nor who would do it. Lorin rested a small list on her arm and with her hand she ticked off names on her list, all those she deemed able to help. There were also, of course, strangers that had been chased out of the wood by the spiders. There were more of them than usual.
Lorin dearly wanted to help herself but that was not possible, she would be more of a hindrance than a help with her disability. Her left hand had become very dextrous in the time she had had without her right and now she could do many things with it, unfortunately, firing an arrow required two hands and that was what would be needed mostly. She could of course use her dagger, a slight bit better than many other Elves could, but that was a close range weapon as she couldn't throw it, nor would she want to, even though it was the same dagger with which she had severed her own hand those few years ago.
She sighed, she was weary, it had been a long time since she had lain down what with all the hustling and bustling about the court. She hadn't had any time to meet old friends as of late either. Not even Min, her own husband, had been around that much. Min was a musician and his songs and tunes were needed to bring cheer in these days of gloom.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ani Dao sat on the marble bench in one of the open rooms in the Mirkwood palace. Lakr Bo sat in a chair next to her, his wound fully healed. Ani Dao had surrendered her mourning dresses for her normal clothes of earthen shades. Her vest was clasped securely around her torso again, its rough leather scent welcoming to her. Wooden, leaf shaped buttons held it together over her dark, sleeveless tunic. She fiddled with one of her knives. All of her weapons were Mirkwood crafted by the royal metalworker, Doret Knan. He had been childhood friends with her father, and spent a good amount of time perfecting Ani Dao’s weapons. She was easily the best knife thrower in Middle Earth. The elf was proud to say that she had no relics or gifts from any other elven kingdoms, and that her past life was no tragedy. She was not dark and mysterious either. The assassin was open and easy going. The death of her Brother, Gyld, had wounded her, but that wound healed as Lakr Bo coaxed her out of seclusion. “How many newcomers is that so far?” asked Ani Dao, as Lakr Bo sketched down tallies on a piece of parchment. The two friends had been doing their best spying work around the palace the last few days and made it their business to know everyone meddling in recent affairs that should have been left to the elves.
“Well we have Idhren, Ravenne, Elentari and Farothwen that are new to Mirkwood. Laiqawen has been pulled in to this whole thing by Thranduil,” Ani Dao snorted. She’s too young. What can she accomplish? “And that’s about it.” Ani Dao nodded.
“That’s wonderful. Two wizard-witches, a wise-elf, some unknown ‘Huntress,’ and a child.” The assassin threw her hands up in defeat. “Mirkwood is doomed!!” Lakr Bo laughed.
“Don’t you think you’re being a little over-dramatic?—”
“Over dramatic?” Ani Dao yelled, jumping up from her seat. Suddenly realizing her action she stopped herself and resumed her place on the bench. She looked towards Lakr Bo challengingly. “Okay then, what do you think about all this?” Lakr Bo was quiet for a while then leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees.
“I agree with you completely. If Thranduil consents to allow another party to disembark, it will end in ruin yet again. The power is too strong. The spiders and orcs are too numerous. If we stay snug inside our palace, no harm will come to us.” He then stopped and leaned back again. “But is that what we want? To stay cooped up in this hall while Middle Earth is slowly retaken by the forces of evil?”
“I have no patriotism for Middle Earth,” smirked the she-elf. Lakr Bo got up from his chair and sat next to Ani Dao, leaning close to her.
“But don’t you want adventure? Sail with corsairs … visit the other elven kingdoms … even see the realms of men …” His lips brushed Ani Dao’s thick blonde hair. She turned to argue with him and Lakr Bo caught her, trapping her in a kiss. The she-elf struggled, trying to get away. Finally she broke free and stood up laughing.
“You watch yourself,” she said, protecting herself from another playful attack. Lakr Bo shrugged.
“Fine. You’ll change your mind soon.” Ani Dao put her hands on her hips in defiance.
“Oh you’re so sure? Just like that I’ll suddenly fall in love with you?”
“Yeah, and I’ll have you wrapped around my finger like a normal she-elf.” An awkward silence followed as the elves involuntarily analyzed their true feelings. Both brushed them away and Lakr Bo stood, rubbing the palms of his hands on his vest, smoothing it out. “You’ll see. But for now I’m craving something to eat. Care to join me for some food in the dining hall? We can further our investigation on these intruders.” Ani Dao didn’t hear him, the taste of his kiss had hypnotized her momentarily. “Ani?” Lakr Bo waved his hand in front of her face, making her blink.
“Oh yeah, ok.” The elf walked out, leaving Ani Dao to gaze questioningly after him. After a moment, she followed.
Ravenne sat in her room, meditating, she missed being in the open air, the walls were too close and stifling her, but the deep breathing of the meditation settled her. She was busy searching, when she felt the presence of hostility close by, she opened her eyes slightly, and although she could see nothing, she smiled, she was being spied on. At this Ravenne closed her eyes and when back to meditating, they weren't going to do anything, at least she didn't think so.
A loud knock at the door, broke her concentration, she was in the middle of trying to mix, a remedy for headaches, the air of the palace was affecting her, “Wise one,” the muffled voice behind the door called "the dining hall has been made ready, if you would care to come and eat" "I will be there presently" she called back, now prehaps, she would be able to meet some people.
Laiqawen strolled down a long hall, still thinking about the Kings words. He was hiding something from her, that much was evident, but what? Voices ahead broke her train of thought. She peered through an archway leading to one of the Palaces large open rooms. She saw Ani Dao and Lakr Bo sitting on a marble bench talking. She was about to say hello when she heard her name; 'Laiqawen was pulled into this whole thing by Thranduil.' Lakr Bo announced. She heard Ani Dao snort. Laiqawen felt a tinge of annoyance at this, and frowned slightly. 'That’s wonderful. Two wizard-witches, a wise-elf, some unknown ‘Huntress,’ and a child.'
Laiqawen felt anger rise inside her. A child? Perhaps she was a little young, but she wasn't completly without experience, she had been on short scouting trips with her father, before the spiders had reappered. Since then he hadn't let her join him. She sighed as she thought of her father. He had gone out an a scouting trip with several others a week ago. How she missed him! Her mother had died when Laiqawen was but 200 years, attacked by a spider while she was out walking. Ani Daos voice once more stirred her out of thought. She felt the anger inside her once more. 'A child?' She wispered to herself, 'I'll show her what a child can do!' And with that she took off back down the hall fingering her daggers as she went.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Laiqawen hurridley set up her block of wood and began to throw her daggers furiously at the timber, flicking her wrist gracefully. She practiced for a hours stopping only to retrieve her weapons. At about four o'clock a young elven-maid came to her door informing her the meal was ready. Thanking her, Laiqawen sheather her daggers and made for the dining hall.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The night wore on as a band of orcs entered the dark forests of Mirkwood. The band was led by a very agressive and rude orc by the name of Nazdush.
The orcs were on their way to Dol Guldur to aid the evil that was growing there. They were ready to fight and kill all who they came across if not on their side. The orc band marched on without much rest. Nazdush was ready to fight and wanted to kill someone. Preferably an elf. Nazdush hated elves and wanted to wipe them clean off the face of the earth.
There were no elves in sight so Nazdush decided he would just have to wait until battle. Then he would get his joy from killing all he could see. Soon Dol Guldur was in sight, the place the orcs would be defending. Now a plan must be devised.
OOC:Is that okay? Too short?? Bad?? This is like my first time doing this with no real plan so I hope it is good enough.
Farothwen had hardly touched the food on her plate she was hungry but couldn't bring herself to eat, she barely looked up as the seats next to her were taken up. Picking up the fork once more she pushed some salad across the plate makeing patterns in the dressing,
"You know its alot nicer if you eat it." Farothwen jumped out her dream world and looked quickly beside her, She took in the she elf before speaking. An assain by her clothing but Farothwen had seen her more recently in clothes of mourning and fair like most Mirkwood elves she'd seen her watching another stranger in the palace. Farothwen looked to the she elfs male compainon she knew him she'd seen him spy on her, Lakr Bo that was his name wasn't it she took a minute to decide then turned back to the female elf and it dawned on her ,
"You must be Ani Dao." The she elf looked at her slightly startled "The king described you to me when I saw him, he said you were someone who could help me better my knife throwing skills." A smile touched on Ani dao's lips, though Ani Dao knew Farothwens name through her spying she asked all the same,
"And since you know my name prehaps I could ask for yours." Farothwen smirked inwardly, amused. What's my name? Surely she knows from all her spying around. Farothwen smiled as best she could anyways and nodded,
"Of course, to men I am known merely as Huntress but my true and elven name is Farothwen which I use in the company of my friends. So i leave it to you which you feel is the most appropriate." Lakr Bo who had been sitting silently untill then now spoke up,
"Then I hope you will alllow us to call you Farothwen as we would like to be friends." Farothwen nodded gently again a small smile on her lips, since entering the palace she had changed her clothing slightly and now wandered round in a slevelss shirt with the rest of her rangers garb, and it was now that she noticed Ani Dao looking at her upper arm, Farothwen follwed her line of sight and looked at her tatoo.
"Its an Iris." she said softly making Ani Dao jump, "A black Iris to be more precise but all the same an Iris."
"I don't understand how you could have a tatoo...surely your no differant......"
"Oh no im no differant to you, I don't get scars and a tatoo would be considered a scar, just with ink. It does after time begin to fade away so I get it redone I refresh it." Farothwen gently touched the tatoo with her finger tips and smiled at it.
"But why would you want to go through that and deface your body in such a way." Farothwen looked up at Lakr Bo and frownd, did she really feel like explaining herself , yes she did it was a nice story to tell.
"A promise is why i ahd it done." Lakr Bo looked as though he was going to interupt but Ani Dao stopped him with a look, Faorthwen continued. "I know this may seem a bit of a long way round, but its something I have to mention for this short story to make sense, I wasn't rasied by elves I was raised by men, nomads to be more precise why I ws raised by men is another story. While growing up I had a friend we did everything together he was like my brother, whever I was so was he and wherever he was so was I, we grew together and on his sixteenth birthday he suggested we get the tatoos I explained to him mine wouldn't be perminant as his would and would fade away after time but he didn't care. So we did his was a dragon and he choose the Iris for me, yet again another story as to why but anyway things were fine after that and then only four years later, we were attacked by orcs a large group of them and many were wounded myself included and my friend he though was mortally wounded and as he lay in my arms dieing I promised him I would always remeber him and then he asked me to find a way of keeping the tatoo so what else could I do but keep my promise............So now whenever it fades I either find someone skilled in the art or do it myself, its one of those things i've picked up over time." Answering Lakr Bo's queation before he asked it,
"Thats so sad how could you keep something with such a sad memory attached to it." Ani Dao asked her quietly, this time a true smile did cross Farothwens face.
"Because it means so much more then that, it reminds me that people we care about die and we have to remember all they stood for, and every good memory we have of them and It teaches me to keep hope and have faith." Farothwen let them digest this and wondered why she'd told the story usually she was reluctant to talk about her past and tried not to at all costs but wasn't that why she had origianlly come to Mirkwood about her past. Ani Dao looked at Farothwen and then down at the plate of food still untouched,
"I did mean what I said...The foods alot better when you eat it." ONce again Farothwen looked at the food and she shrugged her appertite was slowly returning it would be good to eat, but then it was even better to have made some friends before the council the king had spoken about, Farothwen turned to the two elves hopping to be drawn into more converstaion.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ani Dao started suddenly during her conversation with Farothwen. Had she just made a friend? Looking quickly at Lakr Bo she saw him studying the contents of his plate compressing a huge train of laughter with all his might. Ani Dao slapped him hard on the back, making him release his outburst. He started coughing and sat back in his chair for a minute before he could catch his breath. “Ah, you’re very clever friend.” Shaking her head, she turned back to Farothwen who was smiling.
“Does that mean we’re friends?” She had rightfully guessed what just happened and Ani Dao’s respect for the girl grew. Offering her hand, they shook and started laughing. Then the elf witch, and the healer entered the dining area and took seats on the other side of the table. Ani Dao glared at them but they did not see her. The elf witch, Elentari, sat down and took a delicate sip of her wine. Her movements were slow and it seemed to the she-elf spectator that her form of elegance demanded respect. Lakr Bo was watching the two ‘magicians’ in aw. Ravenne still looked as if she was trying to find a cure for death, in that old and wise sort of way. Suddenly Ani Dao guffawed.
“Oh please.” Rolling her eyes she dug into her salad and took another sip of her berry rich wine. “I must admit,” she said to Farothwen. “In all of mine and Lakr Bo’s hard work of spying on these intruders, we have found out the purpose of most of their forthcomings except yours. Unfortunately for us, you don’t talk much to yourself or anybody.” Winking, Ani Dao sat back. She realized then that she was making Farothwen do a lot of talking, and an elf such as this wouldn’t reveal more than she wanted to. Suddenly deciding that she didn’t want to make her feel uncomfortable, having just made friends, she brushed the question aside. “Actually, never mind. We’ll talk about things like that after we enjoy our meal.”
The new friends chatted gaily throughout their dinner. Almost as soon as they had come, Elentari and Ravenne left and Ani Dao’s eyes watched them the whole way.
“You mustn’t look that way towards such noble figures Ani.” The she-elf rounded on Lakr Bo as he whispered it to her.
“Noble? They’ve come to destroy Mirkwood!” Ani Dao lashed back at Lakr Bo through clenched teeth. The elf just shook his head.
“You’re so close minded Ani Dao! You are so wrapped up in your status and your own opinions you don’t think once that your home is in DANGER! Ani, if we don’t do something the spiders will overtake Mirkwood until there is none! Dol Guldor is alive!!” He stood up then yelling so loud, that the dining room was slowly emptying.
“How dare you say this to me? You are sounding like my brother! And guess what happened to him?”
“You don’t even know what you’re saying.”
“No, you don’t! You are sacrificing the lives of our kin for noth—”
“Sacrifice? We are sacrificing them by fighting the spiders every day! We lose at least one elf a week! You can’t just keep walking away from this! Your brother’s dead Ani Dao. And while you wallow in self pity, the rest of us are losing our lives!” Ani Dao stood paralyzed, looking at her friend. Shaking with rage she loosed it.
“If you ever talk to me like that again Lakr Bo I’ll personally feed you to the next goddamn spider I come across!!” She turned and walked out of the room, feeling tears coming on, she broke into a run and didn’t stop until she got to the balcony of her room. When she got there, she buried her face in her hands and fell to her knees sobbing.
“Oh god, oh god, oh god ……” Lakr Bo’s voice drifted through her mind as she remembered a conversation they had once had.
‘I heard that the kingdom of men is twice the size as it was. Led by Elessar and Lady Arwen … wouldn’t you like to see it someday? …’ She remembers also her reply.
‘I don’t want to leave Mirkwood. There’s nothing for me out there.’ That conversation had taken place only a year or so ago. Since then things had taken a drastic turn and she was closed in a world of despair. I wonder what adventure is like … A new flood of tears threatened to overtake her but she caught herself suddenly and stood up and moved over to the large window looking into the completely deserted indoor courtyard. Flowers grew there and the fountain was prosperous but everything had a seemingly dark glow to it making it seem sad. Such was the way of the elves since forever: wise and old. Ani Dao moved away from the window and found herself looking into a mirror. Staring back at her was a stern looking elf. Dark blue eyes looked menacing and hateful. She suddenly smiled, trying to rid them of the shadow. Is this how I am? Dropping her gaze from the mirror she looked around the room. Books lined the shelves, and a half finished weaving was propped up in one corner. Her elegant bed was in the center, curtains draped over it. There was no visible dust; it was all a mental dreariness. Her home was very depressing, she realized. She had lived here for her entire life, spending a lot of time in the forests though. Lately, she had only seen the inside walls of her ‘home’. Sadly, she began to sing ...
“Is this home? Is this where I must learn to be happy? Never dreamed That a home could be dark and cold I was told Every day in my childhood Even when I would grow older Home will be where the heart is Never were words so true My heart’s far, far away Home is too.
“Is this home? Is this what I must learn to believe in? Try to find Something good in this tragic place Just in case I should stay here forever Held in this empty space Oh, but that won’t be easy I know the reason why My heart’s far, far away Home’s a lie.
“What I’d give to return To the life that I knew lately But I know that I can’t So my problem’s growing back!
“Is this home? Am I here for a day or forever? Shut away From the world until who knows when Oh but then As my life has been altered once It can change again Build higher walls around me Change every lock and key Nothing lasts Nothing holds All of me My heart’s far, far away Home and free.”
Ani Dao slumped then on her bed, and buried her face in her plush pillows crying. She would never cry in front of anybody. The elf cried hard and it was long before she fell asleep.
*** fficeffice" />
Meanwhile, Lakr Bo explained to Farothwen of Ani Dao’s condition.
“She’s the most hard head, stubborn, close minded elf you’ll ever meet.” He then explained the entire story of the way the elves had been dealing with the Mirkwood spiders and finally came to the part about her brother. When he was done he looked at Farothwen who held his gaze firmly.
“Now,” she said, “would be a good time to answer Ani Dao’s question. Let me tell you why I’m here.”
Lorin walked through the long corridors, enjoying the rest while she could. She heard footsteps from around the corner, they turned out to belong to Elentari.
"I didn't see you in dinner, have you even had it?" She said. Lorin slapped her forehead
"Dinner!" She said, "I'd clean forgot!" Elentari sighed at her old friend,
"You've been working too hard my friend"
"Oh, and you've not. Out there all day and night killing the spiders, you are far more worthy of praise than I. Anyway, do you know where Min is?"
"Dinner I think."
"All the more reason for me to get there then!" said Lorin as she left. Fancy forgetting dinner! She hadn't had a proper meal for two days, it was high time she had one now. She came into the main hall where there were just a few others left. She took the nearest seat and piled her plate high. Then, taking a specially made combined knife and fork that she carried around with her, she tucked in. She twirled the fork in her hand inbetween mouthfuls and looked around the room. There were new faces, and old. She thought of introducing herself to them but the plate of food was too enticing and she wanted to eat quickly and find Min, she couldn't imagine where he'd got to.
~~~~~~~~
Far to the South, in the darkness of Dol Guldur, there was another tucking into his dinner. He had not the Elven delicacies though, just the birds foolish enough to fly near his webbing and become entangled. That was a meagre meal for any though, let alone Erach, one of the biggest left. There were no deer left where he dwelt, they had either fled or been eaten. This pretty much went for any other living thing near where Erach lived, even other spiders. The birds were finished and he was eager for another meal, he was always eager for another meal. He sat in the centre of his huge network of webbing, with each of his eight legs on the trip threads, they would tell him if anything moved within his realm.
He dozed, awake enough to be alerted by the smallest tremor from one of his threads yet asleep enough to get some rest. At last! There was sign of food! Something big aswell by the feel of it. This was no brush of the squirrel's tail as he would often get, but something landbound truely stomping on his thread. He scuttled quickly through the tree tops, using the paths he'd made years ago over the forest floor. He could now hear the creature, or creatures it seemed now. No, they were not in the least bit subtle. They crashed through the trees like they owned the place, they most certainly did not!
Erach positioned himself above the marching Orcs, for that was what they were, and got ready to throw a thread down at a moments notice. He planned to take one from the end, they never missed anyone from the end. The end of the host came and the last two were plucked up, caught around the waist by Erach's sticky rope. They were hauled up and poisoned, one was eaten on the spot, the other was taken back to be stored.
Erach was satisfied for the moment, he wouldn't actively search for food until the need was truely great. Instead he slept and dreamt of fairer foods. Like those horses that had come through not long ago, he'd had three of them. They had reminded him how juicy meat could really be. Their riders had escaped to Erach's annoyance but he was well pleased with just the horses. Can't have everything, but that doesn't mean you can't try.

Idhren shifted slightly in the marble chair, staff in hand, watching everyone around her. They had gathered in the chief council hall. She could see Ravenne, another of her order, (OOC: I'm assuming!) Elentari, the elf-witch, a mysterious looking person whose name she had heard of as Huntress. There was also another elf, one of Thrainduil's councilors. She looked very young, but Idhren trusted Thrainduil's judgement. Several other elves were also present. Thrainduil rose from his chair at the head of the council. "Honored guests, friends from distant lands, and others yet unknown, I greet you. I have assembled this council at the request of Idhren, who is, no doubt, known to all present. She," he nodded in Idhren's direction, "has come here on a mission. The fortress of Dol Guldur, for long a stronghold of Sauron in the time after his first downfall, is spreading its evil throughout the forest. Idhren is here to see it destroyed. However," he continued, "I have my doubts. Our scouting parties have not been returning, save for their heads. Spiders assail the palace. Creatures not seen for years prowl the forest at night. It is dangerous." The elven king paused. Idhren rose. "If I may speak, King." Thrainduil hesitated for a moment, then nodded his assent, and sat down into his chair.
Idhren cleared her throat. "This mission will indeed be dangerous, but it is a thing that must be done. I have no wish for lives to be lost, but in such an attempt, there will always be loss of life. However, I cannot do this alone. I need volunteers. Dol Guldur must be destroyed." The young elf seated near to Thrainduil stood. "Indeed it must be, but at what cost? As the king has said, there are many things against us. It may be that all Mirkwood will be destroyed if this is attempted."
"It may. But that is uncertain. It is certain however that Mirkwood will be destroyed if Dol Guldur continues to exist. You must see that! Has too many years of sitting in the shadows of your fortress blinded you to the threat? Too many years of complacency? Have you become so sure of the protection that the stone of these walls offers? Sauron has been destroyed, yes, but this remnant of him has lived on." Angry voices rose, drowning her out.

OOC: Since I'm not writing everyone, I don't know what they would say to that, so... I'll just post this, then the council will really get started. Are all wizards disturbers of the peace? Cause I'm treading pretty ungracefully on many character's toes.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- “The council has been called my Lady,” said a voice, obscuring the silence of thought that had overwhelmed Ani Dao in her chamber. The elf assassin looked incredulously towards the messenger. “Council?” She stood and strapped on her bandoleer of throwing knives, and buckled her sword to her side. The messenger nodded.
“Headed by Idhren, the Lady Istari, come to aid—” wonder and respect filled the eyes of the messenger as she spoke of the wizardress. Ani Dao shook her head, oblivious to the other spectral view of ‘aid’. Waving aside the lengthy description the messenger was providing she spoke,
“Fine, fine. I’m coming.” All traces of tears had left the sturdy and exotic face. Sharp features and blazing blue eyes flecked with gold glared at the messenger who dutifully bowed and made way for the assassin to pass in the hallway. Checking the sundial in the courtyard that cast a shadow from the single ray of light protruding from the ceiling, she was pleased to find that it had only been the lesser part of an hour since supper and that she had not wasted much time in her chambers. Cursing under her breath at her emotional breakdown she ran down the stairwell towards the council room. She was one of the first to enter. After bowing, she took a seat beside her king and watched silently as the others entered the room. She knew all their faces well, and most of their viewpoints towards the situation were clearly laid out. Dismissing each one that accepted the possibility that defeat against Dol Guldor was possible, she sat impatiently while Thranduil called the council into action.
“Honored guests, friends from distant lands, and others yet unknown, I greet you. I have assembled this council at the request of Idhren, who is, no doubt, known to all present. She," he nodded in Idhren's direction, "has come here on a mission. The fortress of Dol Guldor, for long a stronghold of Sauron in the time after his first downfall, is spreading its evil throughout the forest. Idhren is here to see it destroyed. However," he continued, "I have my doubts. Our scouting parties have not been returning, save for their heads.” Lakr Bo looked defensively towards Ani Dao, whose face remained expressionless as she listened to Thranduil. “Spiders assail the palace. Creatures not seen for years prowl the forest at night. It is dangerous." The elven king paused. Then Idhren rose and Ani Dao downcast her eyes in disrespect. Thranduil nudged her foot with his scepter and she immediately jerked her head back up.
"If I may speak, King." Thranduil hesitated for a moment, then nodded his assent, and sat down into his chair. "This mission will indeed be dangerous, but it is a thing that must be done. I have no wish for lives to be lost, but in such an attempt, there will always be loss of life. However, I cannot do this alone. I need volunteers. Dol Guldor must be destroyed." Ani Dao stood, controlling her anger and spoke her words quietly instead of shouting.
"Indeed it must be, but at what cost? As the king has said, there are many things against us. It may be that all Mirkwood will be destroyed if this is attempted." Counteracting her sudden defensive statement, Idhren turned and spoke level with the elf’s eyes.
"It may. But that is uncertain. It is certain however that Mirkwood will be destroyed if Dol Guldor continues to exist. You must see that! Has too many years of sitting in the shadows of your fortress blinded you to the threat? Too many years of complacency? Have you become so sure of the protection that the stone of these walls offers? Sauron has been destroyed, yes, but this remnant of him has lived on." Ani Dao’s face remained stern. She was determined not to lose herself in this council. She must retain a certain level of discipline with herself. Self-control was a virtue. Other voices took over. One was Lakr Bo who had stood immediately come to the defense of his friend.
“You must not speak such towards a member of the guard, and a right hand of Thranduil,” he pointed out calmly. Farothwen was seated beside him and winked at Ani Dao. Taken aback at the gesture, she eased a bit and took her seat allowing the others to continue the argument. Members of the guard were present and Ani Dao recognized some faces, and even some new recruits. She had trained some herself and was grateful for their presence. They were talking loudly in instinctive resistance to the wizardress’ appeal. Annoyed with the noise, Thranduil called for order and motioned for everyone to take his or her seats. Announcing firmly that another outbreak of that sort would have the council room deserted in a second, Thranduil retook his seat upon his throne. All but Lakr Bo sat. Ani Dao looked questioningly towards him, trying to catch his eye. His gaze however did not waver and when all was silent he stepped forward.
“Lady Idhren. I have been reflecting on these ideals long before your arrival. Now that you are here and your proposal is the same as I have wished for, I commit my services to your cause, and if it be the two of us solely opposing Dol Guldor, so be it.” He withdrew his sword and placed it before the wizardress’ feet before he took his seat next to Farothwen. His statement was abrupt and to the point. No fancy description about why he had chosen that was given, baffling the spectators greatly. Surprise mingled upon each face of the guard in the room. Why would someone so close to Ani Dao, who opposed the threat the most, offer his service to the cause? Most of them being quick thinkers quickly analyzed that if Lakr Bo was going, than they should go as well. Six new comers placed in turn their swords at the floor of the Istari’s chair. Completely bewildered at her friend’s action, Ani Dao sat, still expressionless in her seat, rigidly situated on its fine cedar structure. Soon, a dozen swords littered the ground before Idhren. Even seniors had given their support. The wizardress herself seemed surprised at the influence the young elf had on the guard and thanked each one breathlessly. Then she turned to the others of the council for their response.
Dark-eyed, Ani Dao remained in her chair. She did not dare make eye contact with anyone. Especially Thranduil. The thought to run crossed her mind, but that would prove pointless, and display lack of courage. She would sit through this confrontation and simply refuse to be a part of this mindless journey. Once again, she thought, I will lose those dearest to me. Damn you Idhren!
Distress must have been etched on her face, for Thranduil called a break and ushered the assassin from the room. They walked towards a room just outside of the council and Thranduil calmly shut them both inside. Two chairs were set up and Ani Dao took a seat in one, looking at the floor, but thinking beyond the yonder wall to where the guard and Lakr Bo sat, their swords given to the cause she so detested.
“What do you think about that Ani Dao?” The elf looked vehemently towards her king and long time friend. “Will you go? The cause is just, I have decided. We have been blind to it for a long time. We have no choice. The death of your brother was a warning. Surely you vow vengeance! Or have you let your friend, Lakr Bo, do it for you?” Thranduil placed his palms on the chair arms and leaned challenging into the face of the she-elf. Dark eyes met his unwaveringly.
“I…will…not…go!” She stood up, pushing the king away from her.
“If you were my daughter I would whip you for your stubbornness. For your hateful heart, pompous way of life, and the resilience to all forms of the generous help that has been given to you. Idhren has no obligation to help us and she does so willingly! Lakr Bo and the guard have realized this, but you do not.” His eyes bore right through the assassin, making her finally turn away. “If you do not go,” he said backing up to the door and opening it, “I will.” He slammed the door firmly and Ani Dao turned infuriated at his response. She sat down hard in the chair. Thoughts swirled in her head considering the challenge. He wanted her to go. It was seemingly necessary to him and the company. There were, of course, many reasons why she should. To avenge her brother’s death, to assure that the fate of Gyld’s was not that of this company’s. The later placed a picture of her opening a sack and finding Lakr Bo’s shriveled head inside. Pounding her fist on the arm of the chair she cursed loudly in elvish, untranslatable in the common tongue. Quickly praying that the gods didn’t hear her she stood up with a fury that upturned the piece of furniture behind her, she bounded towards the door, wrenching it open. The council had been reinstated on the arrival of Thranduil who had informed them that Ani Dao would return shortly or not at all and it was no use in waiting. All eyes turned towards the double cedar doors as they swung out, revealing the elf that entered. A wild smile on her face she leapt up the three small steps to the seat of Idhren and fell in a graceful bow before her feet. Dramatically unsheathing her sword she placed it atop the pile of weapons already given. Gold flecked, blue eyes gleaming she looked right at the wizardress and breathed,
“My god, I’ll go!” Throwing up her hands in defeat she retook her seat to a standing ovation by the guard and Lakr Bo. Shaking her head, the council was calmed and the remaining members gave their replies. Dear Manwe what have I gotten myself into?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Farothwen had been about to reply to Lakr Bo about her reasons for been in Mirkwood, when a messenger entered the hall looking over the room once he made his way quickly over to where they were seated he bowed to them both,
"I have been sent by the King to request that you both be present at the council that is soon to begin." Farothwen nodded for the messenger to go and she and Lakr Bo got up from there seats, Farothwen turned to him and smiled slightly.
"I had been hoping to tell you why I am in Mirkwood but it appears fate has other ideas, though maybe I will yet be given the chance."
"I hope you do I have a feeling that I will enjoy hearing it, I only hope that Ani will also hear it." Farothwen looked up at Lakr Bo's stern face and saw concern flash in his eyes as he mentioned Ani Dao. Farothwen couldn't help but smile inwardly.
On entering the chamber Faorthwen was hit with a wave of clostriphobea the room seemed to be heaving with people, for a moment she lost Lakr Bo only to find him again moments later sitting with a seat beside him which he indicated she should take. Sitting made the feeling subside as the number of people also seemed to lessen, Farothwen looked around and saw Ani Dao sitting on the right hand of the king she looked tense and stern much as Lakr Bo had done, Farothwen was about to call out when the king rose and began. Sitting quietly she listen paitently as first King Thranduil and then to Idhren, finally the floor was open to them. Ani Dao was the first her compassion on the subject leaking through her calm facaude though Farothwen could understand her strong feelings on a mission like this. Lakr Bo had sworn himself to the mission and there was a deffinant change in Ani Dao a look of discomfort, Farothwen will never know how she did it but she just managed to catch the kings eye and with a slight nod of her head indicated in Ani Dao's direction shortly after which a break was called.
Farothwen ignored the chatter around her trying to decide what to do she was under no obligation to go but she knew her talants may be needed, there was also what the King had said to her would he be able to help, King Thranduil had only just restarted the council when Ani Dao appeared from the ajoining rooms she seemed punch drunk as she to placed her sword on the fairly large pile commiting herself to the quest. Farothwen no longer waited, she bowed to the King and then to Idhren,
"I did not come to Mirkwod in search of an adventure infact my intentions were far from it, however after talking with the King and actually been in this kingdom and meeting and becoming friends with some of its people. "She paused to wink at Lakr Bo. "I know now that it would be foolish of me not to join the quest to save it and all it holds from destruction." With a slow practiced hand she drew her sword and layed it so it lay directly next to Ani dao's the tips crossing slightly. Farothwen retook her seat as the king nodded in thanks towards her, Farothwen looked over at her friend who seemed to still be in another world but as there eyes met a small smile of appriciation crossed Ani Dao's lips and was echoed by Farothwen. Leaning back in her chair she waited as others now began to stand and join the quest.

Laiqawen sat silently, watching the stack of swords pile higher. There was silence for a moment while the elves waited for others to join the quest. She stood up and began to speak. 'My Lord,' she began. 'I do not wish to seem a coward, but I am hesitant to join this quest, for I still do not know why I was asked to appear at this council.' The King sighed and stood. 'Laiqawen, it is true, I have left you in the dark during our planning, but now is the time for you to know the truth. I have not spoken out for even I did not know all the facts, but now....it has been confirmed.' Laiqawen stood still as stone, she knew whatever was to come would not be good news. 'As I said earlier,' he continued, 'My scouting parties have not been returning, and as you know, your father was in a scouting party that recently set out...' Laiqawens stomach dropped, she knew what was coming. The King saw knowing in Laiqawens eyes, his heart went out to her. 'Only one elf returned, the rest were taken.' Laiqawen choked. 'D-dead?' She whispered. The king shook his head, 'I do not know, we only know that they were captured.' Laiqawen fell into her seat, her heart pounding, she was short of breath, she felt tears streaming down her face. No, no, no! She thought, Not again! They took my mother, they will NOT take my father too! Laiqawen heart hardened. She stood quietly and in one swift movement she threw her hunting knife on the pile of swords and whispered, 'I will come, I will find him, I will avenge his pain.' Then without another word she ran from the council chamber.

Shirinarsh stirred, awakening. He had felt something. What was it? Power. It was power. But not only the everpresent power of the elves that still lived here, so close to the last stronghold of the dark. It was more than that. Furrowing his brow, he searched his mind, searching through long years of memory. 20 years... 20 years since the fall of the Sauron, and he had slept, the orcs taking control of Dol Guldur, forgetting that he still slumbered, waiting... Waiting for what?
The power had awakened him, alerting him to the presence of an enemy. Istari! His mind spat the answer at him. They were here, here to destroy Dol Guldur. He also felt the ancient power of the elves, before they fell, the first enemies of the Dark. Stretching, he rose. They would be prepared. He must strenghten the fortress, restoring it again to it's full strength. He would be ready for them.
* * *
The first orc that saw him stopped, uncertain, in the hall, crouched, it's jaw hanging slack, long arms dragging. He swept up to it, and lifted it with one arm around the throat. Struggling, the unfortunate beast clawed at black robes, strangling, reaching for it's sword. He studied it for a moment, disregarding it's frantic thrashing and clawing, and dropped it. No use in killing it yet, not before he had got his information.
The orc scrabbled away. Drawing his sword, and holding out his hand, it suddenly stopped, straining to flee, but not able to. Approaching at his leisure, he faced the creature. In a voice that sounded like the snake sliding through the dead leaves of the undergrowth, he addressed it. "I am Shirinarsh. I have awakened. I command. Take me to your commander" Simple, stupid creatures. The orc squealed, but no intelligible words came from it's maw. "I tell you again. Your leader, take me to him." It squealed again, shaking with it's effort to escape. "Useless." With a single swipe, he beheaded the gibbering minion. "Useless." He stalked away.
