Legend is that near the beginning of the worlds history two races existed on the earth, the humans and the espers. one a people of invention the other of powerful magic. In the early years the espers were viewed as gods by the humans and some few of the spers sought to turn this to thier advantage. A group of thirteen espers came together and decided each would master an element of the earth. Fire, Ice, Earth, Wind, Water, Light, Darkness, Mana, Grass, Void, Mind, Order, and Chaos. In order the names of these thirteen are Ifirit, Shiva, Golem, Ramuh, Undine, Luna, Shade, Terra, Dryad, Lucifer, Carbuncle, Emblem, and Belzeebub. Who lived throughout the Early years of history. The others of thier race saw the conflicts which would arise from this council and joined together to form a new pokect universe to exist in which they sealed away from humans just before the time of the mage wars.
The mage wars started with the death of the first esper (whom it was none can now recall) where it was discovered that while espers could transfer a portion of magic to thier subject/worshippers that thier complete power could be obtained and transferred at thier deaths in the form of Magicite. It is around this matieral that the Final Fantasy III video game is based. When the humans discovered they could bind the magic to thier machines to make them more powerful they started a war to eradicate the espers and obtain thier corpses. The Magicite which people still called esper because many believed the true power was from the faith they put in their abilitys and the name esper transfered more belief then the rock magicite. so they are called espers throughout the history. During the war many thousands of humans lost thier lives and All but one Esper was Killed. Her name was Terra the only half human esper who later sacrificed herself to destroy the evil machines we had created and peacefully reunite our people with the rest of the espers. The espers glad to be able to peacefully rejoin the humans were also cautious upon seeing the destruction we had wrecked on our world during the great war and so the entrance to thier universe remains only partly open to this day guarded by two of Terra's descendants who allow access only to a select few to this day. On a side note the espers are supposed to have a natural lifespan of eight thousand years before age causes them to become Magicite.
