I'll help start up this board.

2/25/'03

Socratic Seminars. Today my reading and language class thought up a new topic for the seminar under Romeo and Juliet [we're reading it too]. Here are the questions that I'm thinking about right now:

(1) Should one always obdey their parents without question?

(2) How far should one's loyalty extend to the family?

(3) Under what conditions/circumstances should one be allowed their freedom of choice without fear of repraisal?

I'm writing up a lengthy response, so don't expect it so soon.

What do you think?

BTW:I thought I'd start this board up like this because I thought it was for our thoughts [correct me if i'm wrong]

I am convinced that my family is crazy, and that they are attempting to melt their brain with their stupidity. But I've known that for a while.



1. Well, one should be obidient to their parents, but not all the time. At least, that's what I feel.

(1) Should one always obey their parents without question?

I have always believed one should obey parents at all time but if I think about it harder you cant always obey your parents. When I was a little girl I used to think that parents were always right and that’s the way it was but I was wrong. We all know for a fact parents can be wrong. Would you obey your parents if they said you must jump in the fire (ok dumb example)…. No I would not! So I think one should always obey their parents unless there is a reason not to! Because you can be right, I also fnd some times parents need to obey their children!

(2) How far should one's loyalty extend to the family?

Loyalty is a powerful word! How far… no one really knows but you! You know if you can depend on your mom or if you cant. So no one can answer that question but you. From my point my dad and I do not have loyalty in our relationship because he let me down!

(1) Should one always obey their parents without question?

Yes, providing that their parents are right.

Example 1: If your mother or father says 'don't go to (insert movie name here),' then don't go. They have a reason for it, most definitely.

Example 2: If your mother and father tells you to go steal something, or (insert other bad deed here), don't obey.

I was raised being taught to say 'yes, mom/dad' and ask why later. Fortunately no situation ever arose where I had to disobey because they were asking me to do something wrong.

(2) How far should one's loyalty extend to the family?

Fairly far. Now (forgive my example, but at the moment I'm in the midst of reading Agatha Christie) if a member of your family were to commit a crime and you knew they did it, if the police were to come and ask you, 'Did so-and-so commit the crime?' then your answer should be 'Yes.' You should be loyal to your family, but there is such a thing as being so loyal that you're doing something wrong.
