Robin grinned at the challenge and went flying into the pantry to fetch everything she needed. Silver smiled to see the hobbit lass so much happier and so busy. Soon the pots and pans were on the stove and Robin was able to relax and talk with Hal again.
"Gaddy and Daisy are having a baby," she mused. "Tell me, Hal... what names are they considering?"

Robin was absolutely thrilled to hear the news Hal gave her. She and Daisy had become quite close during their adventure, or so Robin liked to think, and it was very exciting to hear that there was going to be a little Boffin. Leaning back against the counter and looking smugly at Hal, she said, "Babies are what Gaddy and Daisy need. When Dinodas and I get married, I want to have at least seven children."
"That's a lot of children," said Hal, trying to hide the surprise on his face. Robin seemed busy enough as she was, and with seven children?.....
"Could you handle that many?" Silver put in.
Robin nodded decisively. "I wouldn't be happy if I didn't have many children. I didn't have any brothers or sisters, you know, and it was a disappointment because I love children." He began to tell her a little bit about himself and how he was doing, and she frowned when she saw the scars on his arm. He saw that and caught her eye. "Oh," she said, realizing what he was thinking. "Oh, I don't mind a bit." She rolled up herself and showed everyone her own scar with a little grin. "Battle scars are rather enjoyable to show off sometimes." Both Silver and Hal smiled at her.
"Now," said Robin, "that you're here in the kitchen, is there anything I make you, even if only a drink? I'm afraid I don't cook as well as those at the Green Dragon, where we first agreed to go on that little adventure, but I'm fair enough. You have to taste my cooking, Hal, so I can prove that I'm not as terrible as you think."

"Hal?" Robin stared in wonder and the hobbit before her. A laugh of delight escaped her. "Halwon Cotton! I really don't believe it." She returned his hug warmly, then turned to Silver. "This is Halwon Cotton," she said. "He was one of the company that went to Rivendell with Dinodas and I."
"How are you two, by the way?" Hal asked. "Is Dinodas here, too?"
A little frown came to Robin's face and she shook her head. Perching herself up on the counter, she said, "No, he's in Bree, and will be for a few more years. His mother isn't very well, you know, and his father is taking care if her. You remember Dinodas' sister, Ann? The one who came and wished us luck so sweetly? She would have been pleased to look after her mother, but she's thinking of getting married herself, I think. So, as Mr. Green is taking care of his wife, there is no one to work and support the family, save Dinodas. He's working as an inn server."
"I see," said Hal. "That was very generous of Dinodas."
"Yes, he loves his family so much." A dreamy smile came to Robin's face. "He's wonderful." Drawing herself away from her memories of Dinodas, she pointed to a chair and gestured for Hal to sit down. "I'm the cook here," she said.
"Are you?" he asked, making a little face.
"Yes, I know I used to be awful, but I've been taught a little and I'm very much better. You'll just have to wait and see." She laughed. "Now, Hal, how's yourself? And Gaddy and Daisy? Are they married yet?"

"Of course you're not a tyrant, Silver," Robin murmured as they went towards the kitchen. "It's just that... well, I did go on a large adventure once, you know, to get food from Rivendell for the starving hobbits*, and there was so much danger and even death. I couldn't trust anyone but those who were in our own company." Her voice trailed off and she looked down. "I guess I never recovered from all that. One of my cousins died." Silver made no reply to that final statement, which sent a thrill through Robin. She disliked being told, "I'm sorry" whenever a misfortune fell on her. She could not help but think that was just politeness and that there wasn't really any sincerity. But when someone was silent, Robin felt that perhaps there was an understanding. "Well, Robin," Silver said after a few moments. Robin's blue eyes travelled up to Silver's face. They were full of uncertainty and worry. "Well, Robin," Silver repeated, "I suppose you had better just consider the staff of the Silver Birch as your company. That's really what we are, you know." Robin's face lit up and she smiled warmly. They entered the kitchen, and by a quick glance around one could easily see that Robin's previous statement had been true. The kitchen was amazingly clean, with all the dishes and pots washed and put neatly away and the counters seeming to sparkle. Silver looked pleased, but Robin did not. She sighed and ran a finger over the polished counter. "What's wrong, Robin?" Silver asked gently. "You seem disturbed about something." "It's nothing," Robin replied, but Silver gazed steadily at her. "Oh," she said, sighing once again. "It's just Dinodas. I wonder how he's doing in his work and everything. It's just rather hard." Silver nodded. Robin shook her head dismally, then forced a smile on her face. "Well, Miss Silver," she began, but stopped abruptly as she caught the innkeeper's eyes. She started again, correcting herself. "Well, Silver, what would you like me to cook?" *This adventure is available for reading and is entitled The Long Winter

"What has become of Robin, Robin Brandybuck?"
Silver had just barely finished asking the question when a tired voice piped up behind her, "I'm here, Miss Silver." And Robin was indeed there, looking very sleepy and very worried.
"There you are, Robin," Silver said. "Where have you been? I haven't seen you anywhere."
"I hope you won't be too angry, Miss Silver, but I sat down for a few moments to rest my legs and I fell asleep." She blushed deeply and looked down. "I hope you'll forgive me. Cooking in a busy inn is still very new to me." Her head came up again, and her eyes clearly portrayed the worry she was feeling. "And, Miss Silver, I've been looking all over for you. I don't know what time it is, what to cook, or even if I should cook at all! If you could assist me in some way, that would be wonderful."
Silver opened her mouth to speak, smiling kindly at the hobbit lass, but Robin wasn't done. "And, by the way, Miss Silver," she said, "I hope you won't think it bold of me to ask, but I must, no matter what your answer is. After I've finished cooking a meal and everyone is served, I wonder... I wonder if I could come out in the common room and listen to some conversations. It is rather difficult being cooped up in the kitchen all day, especially when there isn't anything to do, and I do long to hear some news of what is going on outside of the kitchen. I do clean up after cooking very fast, you know."

Robin glanced out the window and saw a figure trudging up the road towards the Inn and she could not hold back the sigh that escaped her. Another guest at the Inn meant more food to make, and more food to make meant more work. And it was one of the Big Folk. Robin didn't know which ate more... the Big Folk, with bigger stomachs to fill, or the Hobbits, with their large appetites.
You shouldn't be complaining about it, Robin scolded herself. It's yourself that took up this job and now you'll have to finish it. Besides, you do get some pay and though it isn't much, it all adds up.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Here's as good as any," the man muttered, looking up at the faded sign that read The Silver Birch. The Inn seemed to be a pleasant place, and peaceful at that. Peace... that was what he needed, and it seemed possible that he'd find it there.
His clothes were worn and patched, and covered with dirt. His brown hair fell in scraggily strands down to his chin, and his eyes had a haunted look about them, as if he had seen days filled with fear and evilness. His face was pale and he himself was thin, as though every day of his life had been a hungry one. He carried no real weapons, though a hunting dagger was in the belt that hung loosely around his waist.
When he entered the Inn, his eyes widened in amazement as he saw the great silver birch growing up through the middle of the room. Still staring up at it, he went to the counter, where he ordered a drink. "Very aptly named," he said to no one in particular as he took a seat. Sitting below the great tree filled him with a sense of security, and he began to think that the future might not be as terrible as he thought it might, as long as, in his travelings, he could find a place to stay such as this.
Turning his thoughts away from the future, he absorbed himself with his ale, afraid to meet the eyes of the other guests in the Inn. After all, he didn't know who they were or what they were like. What if they were like the people who had made his life so dismal? He pushed the thought away from his head. Surely there must be some friendly people in Middle-Earth.

Robin felt her heart pounding wildly. For a moment she dared to hope Dinodas, her betrothed, as you might say, would be one of the first guests to arrive. A blush stole to her cheeks and she glanced quickly at Silver, hoping her thoughts hadn't been read. But Silver was standing by the door, waiting to welcome guests. Don't act like a silly little love-crazy hobbit lass, Robin Brandybuck, she scolded herself. Of course you'd love to see Dinodas, but don't let it affect the way you work. Again she scolded herself. Dinodas always affected the way she worked. Before they had become engaged, she had become nervous whenever he was around, therefore affecting her work in a bad way. But now when she thought about him it gave her determination to work and work well. After all, wasn't he working even now and for a few more years to earn enough money to support his family well when they were married at last?
She had known Dinodas nearly all her life, but they had only recently fallen in love and been engaged while travelling to Rivendell to bring food back to the Shire during the Long Winter.
Robin left the doorway of the kitchen to stand by Silver's side for a brief moment, catching a quick glance at their first guests. Then she hastily retreated back into the kitchen. They were an inn. And inns were normally the houses for weary travellers and the like. And weary travellers wanted food. And who cooked the food? Robin gave a little laugh and she set a pot on the stove and went out into the chicken yard (which was, by the way, unknown to Silver. Robin wasn't sure what the innkeeper's reaction would be when she found out a secret chicken yard had been planted at her inn) to get some eggs, whispering, "I hope Silver likes chickens."

Ochone, my dearies, I just don't know how to say this. I'll make it short and awfully not sweet:
I am in the deepest fear that I will no longer be able to own this RPG.
And I apologize with all my heart and soul!
Briefly, when I began it, I had no idea the time commitment for me was going to be so very long, and I don't have the time I had those months ago. I don't intend this to say that you're all very lazy and just didn't get the game going, because it's my responsibility as a game owner to urge you all on, and there are several posts with your own pleas to get the game going.
Also I've been having difficulties with the forum. I've found that things get heated here, and though everyone becomes the best of friends in the end, things still get heated. I've been disturbed by encountering bad language that is considered not good standard on other boards, and I've lost a lot of sleep over it. Several threads have (almost) reduced me to tears, especially when I go play with the babies afterwards. I mean this as no insult to the forum or the members of it; would it be a bother if I were not sensitive to some issues that have been raised?
I hope, I sincerely hope, that the game will not be over because I am compelled to leave (in fact, I must cast aside my lengthy apologies, for supper is ready and I was elected to read Ben-Hur aloud). Elbereth, I believe, once offered to take over ownership. Perhaps she would still be interested.
(And, Elbereth, I have posted once more on this forum to tell you, in the Debate section, that I agreed with you, and to clear up what I had made unclear before.)
Ah, dear me, I hope with all my heart that my leaving will not seriously effect the game.
And please, please, please accept my sincerest apologies...
and, also to those who are not a member of this game, my fondest farewells.
Sincerely, and with all possible love, ---Nurumaiel

Good suggestions from both of you. We'll go with Eowyn's as she is the wicked brute. We'll leave the dramatic death up to you. You can die, or you can get thrown into the nearest jail, or you can repent, but you're not going to get away in your wickedness. Happy endings are crucial.

Thank you so much for the post, Elbereth! I have a feeling quite a lot of people have forgotten about the game.
Now I have to go figure out WHAT has happened to my avatar. I KNOW I didn't change it into... Frodo. Curious, quite curious.

Thanks to Elentari, the game is now up. I'd like to rather repeat myself in something before I see first posts.
As I have already said, the game has started before the kidnapping. Cempa is at home with his family (by the way, his two older sons are carry-along characters; anyone who wants to use them may, as long as they are reasonable).
Mother and girl, post about what you're doing about the house. Make it clear just how you feel about your home and your family.
Rohan group, you would all be in the general neighborhood. Post what you're doing at home, come along and talk with Cempa's family. Establish just what your relationship with the family is.
Wicked kidnappers, sit in some dark, forbidding tavern, spy on Cempa's family, or do anything else, but let yourselves talk of exactly how you're going to kidnap the girl and why. Again, you can come up with a motive yourself or you can work together with Elbereth, Elentari, and me.
Any questions, just post here!
And that's all for now, so get to work on your first posts!

Elentari, I was just considering that yesterday. I had never been informed that I even did have to make a first post though I assumed it would be so... otherwise where would the players start from? Thanks for letting me know.
I'll try to have something up soon. Where should I send it? To you, to Alatariel, or just post it here, or....??

Okay, I think we're just about ready to start. Alatáriel, as our RPG mod, would you mind giving the okay and opening the thread? The PlayersCempa, the father of the kidnapped girl - played by Nurumaiel Mirianna, the mother of the kidnapped girl - played by ElberethVarda Morgen, the kidnapped girl - played by Elentari Elenwen, a bandit - played by Alatáriel Seragon Jaade, a bandit - played by Eowyn Skywalker Delinor Teyina, Rohan company - played by Laireia Frodleod, Rohan company - played by lordoffools Heoleth, Rohan company - played by Ophelia Now this is what's going to happen. The game is going to start the day before the event of the kidnapping so readers will have to time to become introduced to the family and Delinor, Frodleod, and Heoleth... the latter three will be able to make their connections with Cempa's family firm so they'll have a solid reason for wanting to help. Elenwen and Seragon will have time to plot on how they're going to carry out their plan of kidnapping the girl as well as coming up with a good reason why. Alatáriel and Eowyn Skywalker, feel free to talk to Elbereth, Elentari, and me if you want the family to help out with the motive. Also at a later point in the game when the men actually leave the village in search of the girl I'd like all players to know they're welcome to play women of the village to interact with Elbereth's character, who would otherwise be left with nothing to do. She'll need comforting, I'm sure! Any questions? Suggestions?

I like it, Elbereth! It's interesting how she's married to Cempa when she doesn't really love him. A little subplot here perhaps, don't you think?

ElberethVarda, I officially proclaim that you can take over the role of the mother.
I'm a couple days late on PMing the RPG mod to start the game, but I want to wait until after we have the profile for the mother.
Question: Would all you players rather start the game before the kidnapping occurs, at the very incident, or after the kidnapping?
